About

The Music Academy, Madras is one of Chennai’s prominent cultural institutions and a well-known destination for Indian classical music and dance. Located on T.T.K. Road in Royapettah, the institution has played an important role in the development and presentation of Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, and other performing arts for nearly a century.

The Academy was formally inaugurated on 18 August 1928 after the idea emerged from a music conference held alongside the All India Congress Session in Madras in 1927.

The main performance space is the T.T. Krishnamachari Auditorium, which forms the centre of the Academy’s concert activities. The foundation stone for the present auditorium was laid in 1955, and the building was opened in 1962. Over the years, the auditorium has undergone several improvements, including upgrades to seating, air-conditioning, acoustics, lighting, sound systems, and stage facilities. The Academy states that the auditorium is designed to provide a comfortable experience for audiences, including elderly and differently abled visitors.

The venue regularly hosts concerts, classical music programs, dance performances, cultural presentations, lecture-demonstrations, festivals, and other artistic programs.

The Academy is particularly associated with Chennai’s annual December Music Season, which developed from its long-running annual conferences and concerts. Its official archives document annual conferences and concert programs across decades, reflecting the venue’s longstanding role in the city’s performing-arts calendar.
